After a moving tribute to Dr. Jerry Buss at Staples Center Wednesday night before the Lakers first game since his death the Lakers went out and thrashed the team Buss disliked most  the Boston Celtics.Thursday at a memorial service held across the street from Staples at the Nokia Theatre the emotion continued to pour out as great Lakers past and present including coaches Phil Jackson and Pat Riley player executive Jerry West Showtime era Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson and champions of a later era Shaquille ONeal and Kobe Bryant talked about their relationships and experiences with Buss.They talked of his friendly touch with common folks his love of blue jeans his penchant for staying out late or all night his uncommon vision his sharp intellect and his surprising humility.They talked of how Buss would like nothing more than for the Lakers to continue to win at the astounding level they did under his ownership.Buss often said he wanted Los Angeles to by synonymous with the Lakers, and the Lakers known for winning.And so it was to an large degree. In his nearly 34 years as owner the Lakers had the best record in the league by far went to the NBA Finals 16 times and won 10 titles.Buss died Monday at age 80 amid one of the Lakers most troubling seasons a season that was expected to get the team of Bryant Pau Gasol Dwight Howard and Steve Nash into another Lakers championship.

The prosecution case against the Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been in serious trouble after South African police admitted a series of mishaps in their murder investigation  and the chief investigator turned out to be on attempted murder charges himself.

Hilton Botha the detective leading the investigation had fell apart under defences cross examination on Wednesday after he wrongly claimed to have found boxes of  testosterone in Pistoriuss bedroom and admitted that police had no evidence saying its true the athletes version of events.On Thursday further pressure was piled on South African police as they admitted Botha is himself charged with attempted murder.Police Brigadier Neville Malila told the Associated Press that the detective is scheduled to appear in court in May. Malila said Botha faced seven counts of attempted murder over what news reports called a drunken incident in which he and two other police officers were accused of firing shots from a state owned vehicle while trying to stop a minivan like idiots.

There was a python hunt because there was so many of them in florida and there not supposed to be there.The longest was 14 feet and three inches, netting the hunter who brought it in a $1,000 prize. The Floridas Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also announced winners of two $1,500 prizes for the hunters who killed the most Burmese pythons an threat to florida.The total  was 68 Burmese pythons said Nick Wiley the FWCs executive director. However, a team from Ural Federal University which is based in Yekaterinburg, collected 53 fragments, the largest of which was 7 millimeters, according to Viktor Grokhovsky, a scientist at the university.Data from a global network of sensors indicated that the meteor's fiery disintegration as it neared earth near Chelyabinsk, Russia, unleashed nearly 500 kilotons of energy more than 30 times the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.It is the largest reported meteor since the one that hit Tunguska Siberia in 1908 according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The U.Sagencys new estimate of the meteors size was a marked increase from its initial one.

An investigation has identified a French meat processing firm as a likely culprit in the horsemeat scandal that has enraged consumers across Europe and implicated traders and others from Cyprus to Romania. British police investigating alleged mislabelling of beef products arrested three people on Thursday at facilities in Wales and Yorkshire which had handled horsemeat and were raided by police today British media reported.No further details on the British arrests were immediately available. The government said the company knew it could of been horse meat.In the German capital Berlin consumer safety experts say they are now checking all kinds of meat products.

Governor Andrew Cuomo made  New Yorks gun control laws stronger on Tuesday by signing into law a new package of firearm and mental health regulations that mark the nations first since last month's massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.Cuomo who is  a self described gun owner said the December 14 tragedy made lawmakers go in to action and called it a "common sense" measure before enacting what are widely seen as America's toughest gun laws.

The laws strengthen New York's existing assault weapons ban, limit the number of bullets allowed in magazines and strengthen rules that govern the mentally ill which includes a requirement to report potentially harmful behavior.The first term Democratic governor had called for a tightening of the assault weapons ban background checks for people who purchase guns privately and more restrictions on high capacity magazines.The new laws include a statewide gun registry and a uniform licensing standard, altering the current system in which each county or municipality sets its own standard.Residents are now restricted to purchasing ammunition magazines that carry seven bullets rather than 10.The bill creates mandatory life sentences for anyone who murders certain first responders a provision that comes after two firefighters were killed in an ambush as they battled a blaze in upstate New York.
